MIM MLA arrested after altercation with doctor, paramedics

Don't force us to call in the Army, says Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar

Mumbai: An MLA of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has been arrested after he and his supporters barged into a hospital in Malegaon and engaged the doctors and hospital staff in an altercation.

MIM MLA Mufti Mohammed Ismail was arrested after a video surfaced on social media showing him and his supporters creating a ruckus in the hospital. One of his supporters is kicking a hospital staffer.

Ismail was allegedly upset because the doctor had delayed discharge of two suspected Covid-19 patients.

The hospital administration later filed a police complaint against the MLA, alleging that a group of people led by him abused and threatened Dr Kishor Dange and also manhandled another employee.

MLA Ismail denied the charges and accused Dr Dange and the hospital staff of negligence and dereliction of duty. He had referred five Covid-19 suspects to the civil hospital but they were sent back after 10 minutes.

Responding to reports of attacks on health and law and order staff, the Maharashtra state government issued a statement that attacks on police and health workers would not be tolerated.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar cited the Army being called in to implement the lockdown in the United States. He said, “Do not force the government to call the Army. It is our responsibility to ensure we don't reach that stage.”

There have been reports in Maharashtra of a policeman being seriously injured after a motorcyclist drove into him in Vasai, Palghar district. Attacks on policemen have been reported in Beed.

In one incident, sub-inspector Sanil Patil attached to the Valiv police station in Thane district was patrolling a road on Wednesday and when he tried to stop a two-wheeler, the rider sped and knocked down Patil.
