Bengaluru: The motorists using the congested Tannery Road have got some respite after the much-delayed road widening work began, but those using the surrounding roads continue to suffer.
The widening of 4.16 km long Tannery Road began a week ago with the demolition of government buildings.
However, St. John’s road, near the famous church, continues to be a nightmare for motorists. This narrow road is plagued with haphazard parking and traffic violators go scot-free due to lackadaisical policing.
As there are shops on both sides of the road, people park according to their whims and fancies. This only adds to the congestion of this road.
"There is little change in situation over the years. All the complaints to the police fallen on deaf ears. It is very annoying for motorists who have to use St. John’s Road for want of an alternative,” said Rakesh, a motorist.
A senior traffic police officer admitted that there is a traffic mess on the road due to lack of road discipline. "Despite no parking signs, people continue to violate the rules. Many people have been booked for wrong parking and vehicle towing is frequent in the area, but this has not deterred those parking vehicles in a haphazard manner,” the officer said.
He further said that special drives are being conducted on the surrounding roads and vehicles are being towed away.
