Kerala: Police brutality has Opposition walk out

UDF alleges the state government has lost its control over police.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition staged a walkout from the Assembly on Monday alleging that the government has lost control over the police resulting in the recurrence of incidents of unruly behaviour of police personnel. Congress senior MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan gave notice seeking permission for an adjournment motion citing a series of allegations against police, including the death of two motorists following police vehicle checking in Alappuzha and police assaulting a motorist in Malappuram in connection with traffic restriction for movement of Governor's vehicle. But permission was denied for the adjournment motion.

Law Minister A K Balan, who spoke on behalf of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who was absent in the house, said that stringent action were being taken against the errant cops. He also recalled that several police officials were suspended during the time of previous UDF government also for similar instances. "Kerala police has been ranked best by various national agencies after conducting independent evaluations. But obviously isolated incidents of unjustifiable action by police are occurring. The government will take stringent action in such instances. Actions will not be limited to suspension. Further stringent action will be taken on the basis of detailed enquiries," Mr. Balan said.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala flayed that unruly actions by police towards the public were recurring as the government failed to take stringent action in previous such instances. He also ridiculed the state police chief Loknath Behera had recently issued a circular to impart tuition to cops on good manners.
