Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's green fest to begin from April
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to get people to go green with their celebrations by banning the use of disposable plates and glasses at functional halls in the city from April onwards.
With thousands of weddings coming up, the corporation wants to curb the use of plastic in the city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said that even though plastic bags have not completely been eliminated, the corporation’s initiatives had managed to minimise their use.
He said that the corporation had banned plastic bags less than 50 microns. He added that it also planned to ban the use of disposable glasses and plates at all function halls and banquet halls in the city for the upcoming wedding season.
Mr Reddy said that the GHMC would conduct awareness programmes to ensure that people used plates and cutlery made of steel or other non-plastic materials.
He added that the corporation would introduce a new regulation in that regard.
He said that the rules regarding “green celebrations” would be applicable from the second week of April. Mr Reddy added that the GHMC would give out awards and rewards to function halls that adhered to the rules and refrained from using plastic.
