Congress takes down its app from Google Playstore after expose

The party said the URL for membership on the INC (Indian National Congress) app has been defunct for a while now.

Hyderabad: After the French security researcher exposed the data breach by the Narendra Modi app, an ethical hacker alleged that the Congress’ app — WithINC — was sending user details to Singapore.

Following the allegation, the Congress on Monday deleted its WithINC Android application from the Google Playstore and admitted data mismanagement.

The party said the URL for membership on the INC (Indian National Congress) app has been defunct for a while now.

The charge of sharing ‘user data’ by political parties with foreign companies is taking an interesting turn. The Congress that has been needling the BJP about the Narendra Modi app sending user data to a US-based company without consent, was itself accused by the French ethical hacker of misusing personal data through the WithINC app by sending information without consent to a server operating out of Singapore. On Sunday, ‘Elliot Alderson’ posted: ‘ I found something interesting on with the INC #android app, details will be published tomorrow.’

Even as curiosity grew about this enigmatic post, the hacker came out with a series of tweets, the most startling of which was: ‘The IP address of membership.inc.in is 52.77.237.47. This server is located in Singapore. As you are#Indian political party, having your server in India is probably a good idea.’
