Banjara lake to get facelift at Rs 24.87 crore
Hyderabad: The Hameed Khan Kunta, also known as Gunda Cheruvu or Banjara Lake, which has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons, is set to finally get a facelift.
The state government has sanctioned Rs 24.87 crore for the construction of retaining walls and a barrel-cum-road across the Banjara Nala, which originates from the lake.
The irrigation department has released GO No. 495 dated March 19, 2018, regarding the refurbishment of Banjara Lake. The government has instructed the chief engineer to ensure that the estimates are verified prior to the technical sanction. It has asked for designs to be prepared by a competent authority.
The lake has shrunk because of the deposition of building debris. And the walkway near the lake, which is meant for the residents of Ambedkarnagar, has long been a point of contention between environmentalists and the civic authorities.
Over the years, money has been poured into the development of the lake, but it continues to resemble a cesspool. However, the Hameed Khan Kunta will hopefully receive a facelift soon.
