Hyderabad: Officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have been told to spend less time on their mobile phones while travelling in their vehicles in the city. They were asked instead to spend time paying attention to the surroundings in which they are travelling through.
“Give your cell phones a break. Use your phones only to attend to important calls while driving in the city. Pay attention to sanitary conditions, lighting, water leakages, and to potholes on the streets and roads,” GHMC Commissioner D.S. Lokesh Kumar said on Wednesday.
Chairing a meeting with all GHMC zonal commissioners, Lokesh Kumar stressed on improving sanitation in the city.
Every commercial or shopping complex and other businesses that dot about 1,000 km of city roads must have two dustbins outside their establishments, one for dry and other for wet wastes.
This must be implemented even for pan shops, tea stalls and small kirana stores, he said, expressing hope that this move will create awareness among people about keeping their surroundings clean.
The cost of the dust bins should be borne by the respective establishments, he said.
Among the other issues discussed at the meeting were desilting of 344 nalas in the city, and about 50 of them are currently being desilted. The Zonal Comm-issioners were instructed to ensure that all the silt and other wastes removed must be moved to landfills the same day. Also discussed were repairs to existing public toilets and constructing new ones to provide 500 of these facilities in each ward.
As many as 1,661 locations have been identified for constructing public toilets, while sites were yet to be chosen for another 1,331 public toilets.
