Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has directed the state government and the vice-chancellor of Madras University to file a detailed report for failure to provide basic amenities at the Mother Teresa Hostel for Women.
Based on a newspaper report, SHRC judge D. Jayachandran initiated suo motu proceedings and directed the principal secretary in the higher education department, the vice-chancellor of University of Madras, and warden of the Mother Teresa Hostel for Women, postgraduate and PhD students, Chepauk, to file the report in four weeks.
The judge asked the authorities how it was not a violation of fundamental rights that the university was not providing necessary facilities to hostel students.
It also asked what steps the government and university authorities had taken to provide necessary facilities such as drinking water, food, safe living condition and hygienic toilet facilities to students.
The judge called for a detailed report from the vice chancellor, University of Madras, Chennai, and principal secretary to the government, higher education department, Fort St George, Chennai and the warden, Mother Teresa Hostel for Women, post graduate and PhD students, University of Madras, within four weeks
According to newspaper reports, the hostel was unsafe for living and it lacked basic amenities.
