Chennai: 80-year-old nabs housemaid stealing cash with spy cam
Chennai: Weary of theft of jewels and cash at his own home, an 80-year-old man installed spy cams in strategic places at home, and finally caught his maid stealing them.
Narasimhan, lives on Harrington Road in Chetpet with his wife. Since the couple lived alone, they had hired a maid, Savitha (24), who had been working for them for over five years.
Often cash and jewels kept in his cupboard at home would vanish, and though Narasimhan suspected the hand of Savitha, was unable to nail the culprit for lack of witness.
The idea of installing spy cams struck Narasimhan, after Savitha again committed the theft in which Narasimhan lost some more cash and jewels, kept in his cupboard.
Without delay, Narasimhan carefully installed the cams last week, and waited to see how his bait worked.
Not long after, just like he had suspected, 22 grams of gold jewels and Rs 35,000 again went missing. When Narasimhan checked the footage, he found Savitha stealing it. He then rushed to the Chetpet police and filed a complaint.
Police personnel who verified the footage, questioned Savitha who initially denied any connection with the theft. Later, she confessed to the crime, after police showed her the footage.
A theft case was registered against Savitha. Police were able to seize 62 grams of gold from her, but could not retrieve any cash as she claimed to have spent it, police said. Investigations are on.
