Camera, truck, iron box OFF EC's list of free symbols

The EC said the symbol of a farmer driving a tractor did not bear any resemblance to the TRS symbol.

Hyderabad: In relief to the TRS, the Election Commission has deleted the truck and iron box from its list of free symbols for AP and Telangana state.

Soon after the results of the Assembly elections were declared last year, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora in New Delhi and requested him not to allocate poll symbols that resemble his party’s car symbol in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He told the EC that voters in Telangana state had confused party symbols like truck, iron, camera and farmer driving tractor with the TRS’ symbol during the Assembly elections.

Mr Rao requested the commission to modify the party’s election symbol and print it boldly on the electronic voting machines unlike in thin lines used during the Assembly elections.

Karimnagar MP B. Vinod Kumar said the EC had written to Mr Rao, informing him that it had removed truck and iron box from the list of free symbols in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, as both symbols bore slight resemblance to the TRS’ car.

The EC said the symbol of a farmer driving a tractor did not bear any resemblance to the TRS symbol. The MP said the EC also accepted their modified design and agreed to use it while printing ballots for the ensuing Parliamentary elections.
