Bengaluru: Park shut temporarily after Sunday tragedy

One of Uday's friends, Chetan, tearfully recounted the incident that cost him his life.

Bengaluru: The flex boards outside the park said it all, announcing the "Sad demise of Uday" and telling visitors that "The Dr. Rajkumar Karanji (fountain) park is temporarily shut for emergency work."

Besides regulars to the park, some friends of the seven- year old, who was electrocuted Sunday, were outside its gate on Tuesday. One of Uday's friends, Chetan, tearfully recounted the incident that cost him his life.

"Uday jumped over a stainless steel railing near a streetlight and was playing with us when he made contact with a live wire that was jutting out and fell to the ground, screaming loudly in pain. Walkers and joggers rushed him to a nearby hospital, but ..," he said, eyes welling up with tears.

A class II student of a private school at Kullappa Circle, Uday who stayed just a couple of streets away was a regular visitor as his aunt lived in the neighbourhood.

The wires that claimed Uday's life, meanwhile have been insulated but they are still in the park. The watchman who said the park was shut for a week, claimed he often stopped children from entering the "no playing" area, but couldn't explain why it wasn't kept cordoned off.
