Kerala: Lynched migrant gets shelter care

Locals thought he was a child-kidnapper'.

MALAPPURAM: When the media was abuzz with the reports of brutal lynching of tribal youth Madhu in Attappadi, Devnarayan, 65, a migrant was undergoing treatment in Ponnani taluk hospital after he was brutally attacked by a mob two weeks ago. Kalikavu- based HIMA, a non-profit organisation, has come to his rescue now. It has adopted Devanarayan and taken him to its home care centre for the destitute at Kalikavu with the help of the police.

“He has not recovered from the mental trauma so far. He folds up his hands and asks not to hurt him whenever somebody approaches him. We are proving him better treatment and counselling to help him return to normal life. He can also live here forever,” says Fareek Rahmani, general secretary of the care home. There are 30 inmates in the care home which provides a homely living for the destitute and abandoned with amenities and care takers. Devanarayan was eking out a living by begging around Ponnani due to bad health when he was attacked by the locals alleging that he was a child –kidnapper.
