Tamil Nadu CM helps freeing 10 Thoothukudi pilgrims in AP jail

A government press release stated that pilgrims from Ambalacherry village, Thoothukudi district, were heading to Tirupati.

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has come to the rescue of 10 Thoothukudi pilgrims arrested by Andhra Pradesh forest department personnel.

The personnel had detained the pilgrims mistaking them for red sander smugglers when they were proceeding to Tirupati from Tiruvannamalai.

A government press release stated that pilgrims from Ambalacherry village, Thoothukudi district, were heading to Tirupati. They were detained by personnel of Andhra Pradesh forest department at Rangampadi checkpost in Chithoor district on February 16, 2016. They were remanded at Chithoor prison.

Following a plea from their families, Jayalalithaa rushed government advocates Arul and Riyaz to Tirupati to make efforts in releasing them. The V Additional Sessions Court, Tirupati, released them on bail on Thursday.
