Vijayawada: Embarking on usage of technology for policing, Vijayawada police is going to become the first in country to use smart tablets to identify criminals and also issue e-challans on the spot. Making the aspirations of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has been stressing on usage of technology by police, take a shape, the Vijayawada city police are going to adopt various technology-based initiatives for better policing, including prevention and detection of crimes.
A month ago, all the officers, including sub-inspectors, inspectors and other top cadre, were given tablets for enabling effective communication system within the department. Making better use of them, now police are going to have data of over one lakh criminals a touch away in the tablets. Also, biometric record of the criminals including Iris scanning, thumb impression and photographs would be provided. Later, face comparison would be enabled after setting up a cyber cell.
“Police will be issuing e-challans on spot after detecting violations by vehicles. The same is currently done by a PDAs. A database of over one lakh criminals from 2005 would be created and shared among the officers through the tablet so that they can identify criminals easily. This helps preventing and also detecting crime effectively,” said commissioner of police D. Gautam Sawang. “We are also digitalising other systems like court monitoring system, jail release system and others. Efforts are on to integrate all these digital systems and make an effective dashboard,” Mr Sawang said.
He further said that Reliance company has come forward to set up 300 CCTV cameras in the city and it is the biggest among all other CSR initiatives for the surveillance system in the city so far. So far, 42 high-resolution mega pixel cameras for surveillance have been set up on MG Road from Benz Circle to PWD grounds junction.
Cyber police station for Vijayawada city:
Vijayawada police commissionerate is soon going to get a cyber police station on the lines of that in Hyderabad so that cyber cases are registered and dealt with separately as soon as the government okays it. The proposal sent by city police is under active consideration by the government. Once the cyber police station is constituted its officers can register FIRs and investigate independently. Even before that, the city police are gearing up with a strong team of cyber cops for Cyber Policing Cell which will assist all the police stations in dealing with any issue related to cyber crimes.
The cell which will be supervised by an assistant commissioner of police has a team of six sub-inspectors led by an inspector. The cell would also keep a watch on social media sites. The sub-inspectors underwent training in Hyderabad and also with the eSF which collaborated with the state police. NEC Corporation, Japan, an information technology services provider, is also going to extend support to the commissionerate so that all the tech initiatives are maintained effectively. Experts from the corporation also visited the commissionerate a few days ago and discussed issues with the top cops.
