Moist southerly winds cool down heat in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Maximum (day) temperatures dropped by 4ºC on Friday after a five–day heat wave in Telangana. The drop in temperatures on Friday was due to Southerly moist winds prevailing over the state. This condition will continue for another three days but there will be no relief after that, said Met department officials. Temperatures will rise and be stable at 38ºC thereafter.
Summer will begin in March this year. The maximum temperature in the city in February was 38.7ºc. The maximum day temperature recorded on February 26 in Hyderabad was 33ºC, a sudden drop from the 37.2ºC recorded on February 25 (Thursday). The city had recorded the highest, 38ºC, on February 23. While Nizamabad with 39ºC reported the highest in the state followed by Medak at 38.9ºC.
N. Narasimha Rao, assistant meteorologist at IMD Hyderabad said, “The two prime reasons for the drop in the day temperature are the Southerly moist winds prevailing over Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and an upper air trough from Karnataka to Vidarbha, which is extending up to 0.9 km above the main sea level. In this situation the maximum temperature will fall 2- 3 degrees, moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in isolated place in TS and Coastal AP. However, dry conditions are likely to prevail over Rayalaseema. This will continue for another three-four days.”
The temperatures will begin to rise from March onwards though the IMD authorities have predicted thunderstorms and hailstorms in March.
“The temperatures will gradually rise. But the day temperatures will depend on the development of clouds. The forecast for February 27 is general cloudy sky with mist or haze in the morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 34ºC and 22ºC respectively,” said the official.
