HMRL ropes in DMRC for Metro Rail II
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has entrusted Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) the responsibility of carrying out a feasibility study and preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for phase II of Metro Rail in the city.
The task was assigned to DMRC a couple of days ago after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao asked officials to initiate the ground work on the phase II expansion immediately. DMRC will carry out the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and social impact assessment (SIA) study, apart from the financial viability, ridership enhancement and the security measures.
According to HMR MD N.V.S. Reddy, “It will take a minimum of five months to prepare the DPR. The new Metro Rail policy of the Indian government has put stringent conditions, including alternative transport options study, for sanctioning new Metro Rail projects.”
Director of DMRC S.D. Sharma along with V.V.R Reddy inspected the alternative corridors for the phase II on Thursday. Discussions were also held at Metro Rail Bhavan on Friday on closing gaps in the phase I, integration with the existing public transport.
DMRC was directed to suggest routes for phase II on the basis of maximum travel demand. The HMR MD suggested DMRC to factor in the availability of government and open lands while positioning Metro stations and depots. In the next five months, DMRC will conduct field survey, traffic and transportation surveys, suggest alternative routes, plan feeder bus services and pedestrian facilities.
