Jallikattu: 90 persons hurt, bull dies in 2 events
PERAMBALUR: At least 90 persons including over ten bull-tamers were injured and a bull was killed in two separate jallikattu events, one held at Arasalur near Perambalur, and another Palinganatham village in Ariyalur district on Thursday. Police said, over 100 bulls in different parts of Perambalur and adjoining districts took part in the first event. A four-member veterinary doctors team thoroughly checked the bulls while another team of physicians checked the health condition of the bull-tamers. As the jallikattu events rolled out, in the melee at least 10 bull-tamers were injured and all of them were admitted to the Government headquarters hospital here.
A bull owned by Sevathiyan of Annamangalm died when the cattle dashed against the nearby tree as it sought to flee from the hands of the tamers, police said. Similarly, at least 80 persons, including both bull-tamers and members of the general public were injured in a jallikattu event in which more than 150 bulls took part at Palinganatham village near Ariyalur on Thursday.
Police said all the injured were given first aid at the primary health centre at Venganur and 73 of them were treated there itself; the remaining seven injured were referred to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government hospital at Tiruchy, police said.
The injured bull-tamers were identified as Bhoopalan (30) of Pullambadi, Sankar (18) Palinganatham, Ramesh (26) Thuraiur, Raja (30) Villupuram, Dhandayuthapani (45) Samayapuram, Thirunavukkarasu (30) of Keela Arasur and Karthik (35) Keelapaluvur
