Hyderabad: Police inaction against abuse comes into focus

One of the treating physicians, in an official statement said that the patient was suffering from ILD (interstitial lung disease).

Hyderabad: The video of policemen being abused and pushed away went viral on social media platforms and attracted several comments. People asked whether this was part of the ‘friendly policing’ method since they seemed to be standing there taking the insults.

The video was of a patient’s relatives at Global Hospital going berserk and damaging hospital property after the patient died.

DCP Central Zone, P Vishwa Prasad said that the Saifabad police has booked cases under section 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code against the attackers.

‘Hyderabad Police’s helplessness is seen by the whole world. How can people feel safe if police itself is not safe’ (sic) asked Vijay Goud on Twitter.

Another tweet that tagged DGP Telangana said: ‘The video that is circulating shows that the police were not able to control 2 people. Even after being abused and pushed. This will only encourage miscreants to take police lightly. @TelanganaDGP’.

Inspector Saidi Reddy of the Saifabad police, said in defence of the police: “Let alone a cop, anyone who went close and intervened would have been badly hurt. Ahmed’s sister even broke the glass on the second floor and threatened to jump off from there. We had to tread lightly.”

One of the treating physicians, in an official statement said that the patient was suffering from ILD (interstitial lung disease).

“She was admitted with H1N1 pneumonia and needed intubation. The family was not giving consent for intubation so we kept her on NIV (non-invasive ventilation).

On Monday when she desaturated on NIV and her hemodynamics worsened, they (family) gave consent for intubation.

Post which, after two hours, her hemodynamics further worsened and she had a sudden cardiac arrest. The condition was clearly explained to them but they were not willing to accept the situation. They did not want to go to another hospital,” the doctor told this newspaper.
