Chennai: Officials return from poll duty, civic works resume

It is learnt that the major work halted during the election was the delimitation of corporation wards.

Chennai: Works ranging from building plan approval to delimitation of wards that were halted owing to the RK Nagar byelection are all set to resume with Chennai Corporation officials returning to their regular duties after a gap of nearly a month. According to a Chennai Corporation official, more than 500 staff from Chennai Corporation had been deployed in RK Nagar to conduct the election. “Corporation engineers were posted in flying squads and revenue officials were engaged in preparedness works”, the official said.

It is learnt that the major work halted during the election was the delimitation of corporation wards. The election department had taken up delimitation of wards according to the population. “The delimitation of wards has been taken up to ensure number voters in the wards are not more than 33,000. Completing delimitation is an important job as the High Court has ordered to expedite the process so as to conduct local body election”, the official said.

Although the collection of property tax and property tax assessment has not been badly affected, other works such as awarding tenders to take up development projects and providing building plan permissions were affected. The Chennai Corporation officials also said that the election model code of conduct in the Chennai district is expiring on Tuesday. Though official meetings cannot be done, other paper work could be taken up, the official added. More than 1,500 officials from various departments had been posted in RK Nagar to conduct the byelection.
