Silt traps must for hospitals in Hyderabad

The Water and Sewerage Board will clean the silt every week. Silt chambers are easily available in the market.

Hyderabad: It will soon be mandatory for hospitals and hostels in the city to install silt chambers or traps in their sewer lines. The sewer lines have been found to be choked with solid waste; the silt chambers will filter out the waste and allow the water to flow freely.

Residential homes, too, will be asked to install silt chambers to avoid choking of sewage lines and the consequent overflow of sewage. The Water and Sewerage Board will clean the silt every week. Silt chambers are easily available in the market.

Board managing director M. Dana Kishore said the silt chamber “acts like a strainer”. It should be installed at the mouth of the drain line connected to a residence or a commercial establishment.

“Waste such as plastic waste, sanitary pads, and green or kitchen waste also gets into sewer lines. Hotels especially dispose of garbage in drains, Mr Kishore said.

The traps are made of aluminum or hard plastic and are easily available in the market. To further unclog sewage lines the board has procured 70 small manhole cleaning machines for drains in the bylanes.
