Hyderabad: Adobe CEO couldn't get testimonial

Around 700 alumni turned up, mostly senior working or retired government officials, businessmen and employees of corporate houses.

Hyderabad: Alumni of the Osmania University College of Engineering made one common recommendation to the university: Make the curriculum more industry-oriented and ensure the students get practical knowledge before they graduate.

The OUCE Alumni Association conducted its second Global Alumni Meet on Sunday for which Adobe Systems CEO Shantanu Narayen, a student of the electronics and communications engineering of the 1984 batch, flew in to be the chief guest.

Mr Narayen said after inaugurating the OUCE Alumni Association office that the lessons on microprocessors had triggered his interest in computer science.

He said he could not get a recommendation from one of his professors while studying in OUCE for applying to universities in the US; the professor used to give recommendations only to the top two students from the class.

Mr Narayen was felicitated along with his father, Mr Lakshmi Narayen, a pass-out from the 1952 batch, who was felicitated as the oldest alumnus.

Engineering Staff College of India director Dr D.N. Reddy, a former student, said OUCE should recruit senior faculty, have more collaborations for research, start outreach programs and have a more flexible curricula.

Dr D. Vijay Kumar, general secretary of the association, said a corpus fund had been set up for which they wanted to raise Rs 2 crore by next year. The interest on the fund would be used to help OUCE and its students in various aspects.
