Look at the damage, we’ve lost everything: Residents
Navigating through a devastated Krishna Layout, Radhamma, a local resident and her husband were busy salvaging some of their utensils and clothes, that were covered in a thick layer of mud, on Monday.
“We have no electricity, or clean water to even wash our faces. All our belongings, insurance papers, and rations that we stored over months, have been washed away in the flood,” said an upset Radhamma, adding that the clothes, documents and books of several families were washed away in the sudden flood that hit the locality.
Hundreds of residents, who were housed in relief centres Sunday , returned to assess the damage done to their homes and belongings as the water receded Monday morning. But their children have been forced to miss school as they cope with the disaster.
“Look at the damage we have suffered. Yesterday we climbed on the rooftops to escape the water. And now we are still cleaning our houses and there is no power supply. There is no way our children could have attended school today,” said Ramanna, another local resident.
The BBMP, which has stationed its mobile health clinic in the area, is helping those who have taken ill following the flooding. “We have not heard of anyone being injured. But people have come down with fever and we are treating them. We are here today and depending on the situation, another mobile van will be deployed tomorrow,” said Dr Bindu, manning the clinic.
BBMP commissioner, B.H. Anil Kumar said mobile toilets for men and women had been set up in the shelters and the cleaning operation was on. “The BBMP will coordinate with the food and civil supplies and revenue departments to help provide duplicate documents to those who have lost them in the Hulimavu flooding,” he assured. Food packets too have been distributed among the affected families.
The situation was no better in BTS Layout, where miserable shopkeepers were seen assisting personnel of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services pump water out from the basements of their shops.
“We have suffered a heavy loss. The water gushed in and I have been cleaning my shop since morning. Most of the goods here cannot be sold now and the furniture too has suffered heavy damage,” complained one distraught shopkeeper.
