Mumbai: Heroic tea seller awaits government job

A film company has approached me. They want to make a film on my life, Chhotu said.

Mumbai: “Nothing has changed for me, I was promised a job and I am still waiting for that promised to be fulfilled. However, I feel good because I was able to do my bit, which saved human lives,” said Taufique Shaikh, better known as Chhotu Chaiwala, who sells tea outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station — one of the prime targets of the attackers on November 26, 2008.

He saved hundreds of lives by alerting civilians at the time of the attack.

Recalling the aftermath of the incident, Chhotu said, “I was called by the DRM, and he gave me Rs 5,000 as a cash reward. He also promised that he would make sure that I would get a job at least as class four employee, but nothing has happened since then.” Chhotu, however, is excited that somebody has shown interest in making a film on his life.

“A film company has approached me. They want to make a film on my life,” he said.
