Hyderabad: Local bodies default water cess to Centre
Hyderabad: The Centre has served notices to several local bodies including the Secunderabad Cantonment Board to pay water cess arrears.
The Centre has enacted Water (Prevention and Control of pollution) Cess Act to raise money for state pollution control boards.
According to this Act every industry and local authority such as municipality, municipal corporations, cantonment board has to pay water cess to the Centre. In TS, the PCB is has to levy and collect the cess.
With the cess not being paid, the Centre has asked these bodies to clear arrears immediately with 2 per cent interest per month. The arrears owed by the SCB and other local bodies have crossed Rs 3 crore.
Warangal Municipal corporation is due to the tune of Rs 90, 78, 780, Karimnagar Municipal corporation is due to the tune of Rs 56, 11, 463, Nizamabad Municipal corporation is due to the tune of Rs 25, 99,937. Secunderabad cantonment board is due about Rs 450 only.
