CB-CID to probe Ilavarasan's death
Chennai: The Madras high court has transferred to CB-CID, the investigation into the alleged mysterious death of a dalit youth Ilavarasan, whose body was found near a railway track, after he married a Caste Hindu girl, on July 4, 2013, in Dharmapuri district.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan passed the order on a petition from T. Elango, father of the deceased Ilavarasan, which sought to transfer to Special Investigation Team, the investigation into the death of Ilavarasan.
The bench said as per the report placed before it, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Harur, had concluded that distressed over his failed love affair, Ilavarasan committed suicide hit by a train under the influence of liquor, and that nobody could be blamed for his death.
“In view of the different perceptions of the two doctors, we consider it appropriate that the deposition and investigation material be handed over to the CB-CID for further investigation and a report be submitted to us. List the matter for compliance on February 17, 2017”, the bench added.
In his petition, Elango submitted that after his son married Divya, a caste Hindu, and her father committed suicide, the caste Hindus unleashed violence on dalits living in three colonies in Dharmapuri district. Nearly 400 houses were burnt and properties belonging to Dalits were damaged.
On July 4, 2013, his son was found dead near a railway track. After he moved the court, second post mortem was conducted. While so, on July 7, 2013, the Superintendent of Police informed the media that Ilavarasan’s death was suicide.
This created serious doubts in fairness of the investigation conducted by the police. The investigation has not been done properly. Therefore, to unearth the truth, scientific and fair investigation was required, he added.
