TIRUCHY: The much-awaited 12.70-km long semi-ring road connecting the five national highways in and around Tiruchy is expected to be ready by January 2020.

It will help ease traveling for the public from Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Tiruchy, especially those who proceed to Karur from these three destinations, by reducing the distance by at least 20-km by avoiding Tiruchy city, according to the district collector, S. Sivarasu.

He told accompanying newsmen that the project proposed way back 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs 122.20 crore, commenced at Asur on the Tiruchy-Thanjavur National highway, touching Mathur on Tiruchy-Rameswaram national highway, it reaches Panchappur on Tiruchy-Madurai National highway, cuts through Thayanur on the Tiruchy-Dindigul national highway and finally connects to Thindukkrai on the Tiruchy-Coimbatore national highway, Mr. Sivarasu said out of the 12.70-km semi-ring road, the project has been completed for a distance of 8-km and the work is going on in full swing for the remaining distance of 4.70-km.

Due to several reasons, including delay in the land acquisition process, non-cooperation by the contractors, it has been delayed.

Now all such problems have been solved and motorists will get great relief as the semi- ring road between Mathur and Thuvakkudi will be opened within a couple of months, he added.
