Krishnagiri health official warns against divine cure' for H1N1

Ashok Kumar also asked the people in remote villages to visit the nearest government health facility if they have any health problems.

Krishnagiri: The Krishnagiri district health officer has disclosed that of the two recent cases of H1N1 that have been reported in the district, a woman patient recovered from the fever and shifted for further treatment to a Bengaluru private hospital.

However, another incident in which a minor girl died of mysterious fever was attributed to superstitious belief of her relatives, the officer said. Her death could have been avoided had she be taken to a qualified medical doctor instead of those who promise cure through divine intervention.

The swine flu case was detected by Amanullah free health clinic (AFHC) at Athimugam in Shoolagiri taluk of Krishnagiri district and the patient was identified as 50-year-old M. Mubeen Taj, a native of the same village.

Ms. Mubeen was first admitted a fortnight ago to a Hosur private hospital in the district, though the doctor in AFHC asked her relatives to take her to the nearest government health facility.

Then, the lady was shifted to another private hospital in Bengaluru, where Mubeen Taj was kept in the intensive care unit and recovered from the fever.

“There is improvement in the heath condition of the woman who was tested for swine flu,” K. Ashok Kumar, joint director for health, told DC with a sense of relief.

Nonetheless, he added, “the other girl (Saranya) who died of a mysterious fever was not because of the negligence of our department. Our team, following, reports visited the village and found that the girl was not given proper medical care by her relatives due to their superstitious belief.”

Ashok Kumar also asked the people in remote villages to visit the nearest government health facility if they have any health problems. He also advised villagers not to seek the help of people who promise cure through divine intervention, as that will go wrong like in the case of Saranya.

Ms. Saranya, 16, of Sithandapuram, near Anchetti in Denkann--ikottai taluk of Krishn--agiri district died on way to hospital on Tuesday. The girl had high fever for over five days, but was not taken to the government hospital in time.
