Bengaluru: ED raids Amnesty for FEMA violation

The ED will book a case against the organisation under FEMA depending upon the recovery of any incriminating documents, the office added.

Bengaluru: The Enforcement Directorate, Bengaluru on Thursday raided the office of Amnesty International India in Indiranagar in the City for alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999. According to official sources the Bengaluru based Amnesty office was raided in connection with a 2012 probe against the funding of the global not-for-profit organisation in the City by the Home Ministry following which their licence for Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) was cancelled.

“After the cancellation of their FCRA licence Amnesty International India has reportedly been getting funds from Amnesty UK under the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which is violation of FEMA because they are working in the social sector and are not a commercial entity,” charged a source on condition of anonymity. “The ED will book a case against the organisation under FEMA depending upon the recovery of any incriminating documents,” the office added.
