Attention diversion gang on the prowl

The incidents were reported at Rajendranagar, Mailardevpally, Pahadishareef, Narsingi, Thukkuguda and Shamshabad.

Hyderabad: With six instances of attention diversion gangs stealing over 28 tolas of gold from women in Cyberabad, special police teams have been deployed to catch the four-member gang that is believed to be responsible for the spree two days ago.

Police sources said the movements of the gang were caught on the CCTV cameras at different places in Cyberabad.

Initially, the investigators thought only two persons were involved in the offences. Analysis of the CCTV footage shot at different places showed that they were aided by two others.

The incidents were reported at Rajendranagar, Mailardevpally, Pahadishareef, Narsingi, Thukkuguda and Shamshabad.

Police officials found that two persons, one of whom was dressed as a ‘baba’, approached women and offered to perform special prayers to bring prosperity for their families. The duo collected the women’s mangalsutra after making them believe that they had to perform the prayers it. Then, they would escape after diverting the attention of the women.

The other two members of the gang stayed at a distance to observe the movements of public so to alert their gang members and to escorted them away.

Teams of central crime station and special operations teams are working on the clues that they picked up from the complainants and from the CCTV images. A few teams went to the neighbouring states in search of the gang.

Shamshabad DCP N. Prakash Reddy said, “The suspects seem to be hailing from other states. The modus operandi seems to be similar to gangs of other states. Special teams are on the job to trace the accused. Analysis of the routes of entry and exit of the vehicles used by the accused is underway. They will be apprehended soon.”
