Hyderabad: Subjecting students to mental pressure is not proper, observed the Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday as it directed the principal of Hyderabad Public School to consider the request of K. Advetya, a student, for demotion from Class 2.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice J. Uma Devi was dealing with an appeal by the student, represented by her grandmother, challenging an order of a single judge dismissing their writ petition asking for the demotion as the child could not cope with the Class 2 workload.
Kommireddy Jyothi, grandmother of Advetya, had asked HPS to demote her granddaughter because she was under great mental pressure.
When the HPS management refused her request, Ms Jyothi moved the High Court, stating that the management was mentally harassing the child.
Her counsel, Kommireddy Ramulu, informed the court that the school was delaying their request for demotion so the child was unsure which class she was in.
He said that as per the rules, the child is eligible for admission in Class 1, and the management of the school was claiming that it is not a government school, though the High Court has earlier ruled that the Hyderabad Public School is a government school.
While allowing the appeal, the bench questioned how the management had arrived at the conclusion that the child was a genius and could cope with Class 2 work without having completed Class 1.
The court maintained that the decision of the management to admit a student in Class 2, who had not studied in Class 1, is not rational and asked the school management to rethink its decision.
