Chennai: In a major initiative that could go a long way in preparing the Tamil Nadu government school students to face competitive examinations like Neet, the State school education department on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two institutions including the Speed Institute here.

The students would be provided free coaching and in the initial phase 100 coaching centres will be established and by January next year, 412 more centres will be established across the state. “These two institutions have come forward to groom our students for free to face all competitive examinations including Neet. The classes will be conducted through video conferencing and ample time would be given for the aspirants to interact with the teachers during the training sessions,” Mr Sengottaiyan said. Speaking to reporters after launching a manual for IIT – JEE, here, he said the centres would enable students to take up the coaching from various places.

“A detailed schedule on the duration and also the days will be evolved by the government and announced,” Sengottaiyan informed. About 13,240 students have already enrolled for the coaching and owing to a demand from several students to extend the deadline for admission, the government has agreed to take in students till this month-end.

This will facilitate additional 20,000 students to get themselves enrolled, the minister said and added that the government was launching these centres keeping in mind the future of the students. “We will definitely create more classrooms to accommodate the aspirants,” he said in reply to a question but ruled out admitting students from private schools “for now.” The memorandum has been signed for a period of three years.
