Cyclone Kyant now heads for Andhra Pradesh

Met predicts storm to hit AP coast by October 28, bring rains.

Visakhapatnam: Cyclone Kyant had changed its course and is currently heading towards Andhra Pradesh. Earlier, it was predicted that the cyclone would hit the Odisha coast on October 28, sparing AP, but now, with the tilt in its direction, AP, particularly north coastal AP, is expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone. The weather system is currently located over the east-central Bay of Bengal, about 630 km north-northwest of Port Blair, 680 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 815 km east of Visakhapatnam. The cyclone will move further west to west-south-westwards towards west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 72 hours.

As a consequence, moderate rains are expected to lash AP from Thursday, and intensify in the ensuing days. According to the weathermen at the Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam, north coastal AP will start receiving moderate rains from Thursday. “Thereafter, the weather system would result in fairly widespread rains across coastal AP and very heavy rains at a few places on Friday and Saturday,” said a senior official at the CWC.

Squally winds reaching a speed of 55 kmph, gusts up to 65 kmph are likely to prevail along and off Odisha and coastal AP from Thursday. Weathermen cautioned the fishermen to not venture into the sea.
