Congress opposes privatisation of road works

The Congress leader asked the Minister KTR to first focus on filling up thousands of potholes on city roads and take up immediate repairs.

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy has strongly opposed the proposal made by municipal administration minister K.T Rama Rao to handover the maintenance of city roads to private agencies.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said that the proposal was only aimed at benefitting the private companies and contractors and not at improving the conditions of roads. He said, “The GHMC roads remained neglected under the TRS regime during the past five-and-a-half years. Not even 1 per cent of total budget was spent on maintenance or upgrade of civic infrastructure in state capital. The GHMC was continuously deprived of funds which deteriorated the condition of roads with each passing day. The quality was so sub-standard that they could not withstand a small spell of rains.”
