Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government on Monday appointed former Madras High Court judge, Justice A. Arumughaswamy, to probe the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
The State government said a government order (GO) has been issued in this regard. “To conduct inquiry and submit a report on the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, an inquiry commission headed by retired high court judge, Justice A Arumughaswamy, has been constituted,” the official statement said.
The former judge’s name was announced more than a month after the Tamil Nadu Government decided to institute a one-member judicial commission to go into the death of Jayalalithaa, who breathed her last at 11.30 pm on December 5, 2016.

Arumughaswamy was born on April 28, 1952 to A.K. Ardhanariswamy and Mariyammal. After completing early education at North Municipal high school, Coimbatore, he graduated from Government Arts college, Coimbatore in 1971. Following completion of his law degree in 1974, he practised as a Lawyer in the office of V. Mylsamy in Coimbatore.
He joined the subordinate judiciary as District Munsif in May 1986, was promoted as Sub-judge in 1991 and as District Judge in January 1998.
After serving in various districts, he was posted as Registrar General, Madras High Court, on March 31, 2009. He was elevated as Judge, Madras High Court on February 17, 2010.
After his retirement from the service on April 27, 2014, he assumed charge as Charman of the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal, Mumbai. He served the DRAT for two years and demitted office as Chairperson, Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal, Mumbai on February 8, 2016. He also served as a Judicial Member, CAT, Madras Bench, Chennai from March 21, 2016 till April this year.
