Exchanges give old' notes, tourists fume

The RBI is focusing on higher denominations, which occupy more than 87 per cent of currency in circulation.

Hyderabad: The poor quality of currency notes available with money exchanges at the Shamshabad airport is inviting criticism from foreign tourists.

The RBI is focusing on higher denominations, which occupy more than 87 per cent of currency in circulation. It is not releasing new currency notes of smaller denominations. Currency notes of Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20, which were printed 15 years ago, are being circulated against their RBI-stipulated life span of 12 years.

Most of the Rs 20 and Rs 10 notes ere printed before 2006 and Rs 5 notes before 2009. Bankers said that the RBI should print smaller denomination currency notes.

A visitor from the UK, Mr Philip, who visited the city recently to learn transcendental meditation, said when he exchanged currency at the airport, he got torn notes. “We had heard of demonetisation policy, but I was surprised to get poor quality notes,” he said.
