Centre no to Andhra Pradesh plea on split

The AP government had requested the Centre to extend Section 108 for two more years to resolve pending bifurcation issues.

Hyderabad: The Centre has made it clear to TS and AP that it would consider extending Section 108 of the bifurcation Act only if there was a specific issue.

According to Section 108, the President can take any action to remove difficulties by an order that is not inconsistent with the bifurcation Act.

The section expired on June 2. The AP government had requested the Centre to extend Section 108 for two more years to resolve pending bifurcation issues.

In a letter to both governments, Union home ministry undersecretary (Centre and state relations) A.K. Manish said specific justified reasons were required to amend the Act for extension of validity of Section 108.

He said the government had represented that bifurcation of assets and liabilities of institutions listed under Schedule 9 and 10 of the AP Reorganisation Act were pending. Mr Manish said these were issues to be resolved by the two governments.
