Dog Lays Down Life, Saves Master, Family From Snake

BHUBANESWAR: A German Shepherd pet dog was on Friday night killed while protecting the family of its master from a cobra in Odisha’s Burla town. As per reports, Nilakantha Mohapatra’s family had adopted the dog, Blacky, 15 years ago.

On Friday night, the family members heard Blacky barking unremittingly in the courtyard of their home, where it was leashed. As the family opened the door to their backyard, they saw a cobra with a raised hood hissing angrily at the dog which continued barking at the reptile. Soon a fierce battle ensued as the cobra approached the dog.

While Blacky managed to bite the snake to death, it could not save itself from the lethal bites of the reptile. In the end, both the cobra and Blacky died on the spot.

Sharing details about the incident, the pet owner Nilakantha Mohapatra said, “A cobra had entered our house. We did not know that until the dog started barking. We saw the cobra and our dog engaged in a fierce battle with Blacky. The dog, despite being tied to a chain, fought valiantly and bit the snake. However, he could not escape some bites from the snake too.”

Earlier on February 20, 2020, a brave pet dog had saved its master’s family from a cobra. Shera, a male dog of Doberman breed, along with its partner Shara fought off a cobra for around 15 minutes to prevent the serpent from entering into its master’s house at Jatni on the outskirts of Odisha capital Bhubaneswar.

The incident took place in broad daylight. The battle between two dogs and the cobra was caught on a CCTV camera installed outside the house.

In November 2019, a pet dog named ‘Laden’ fastened with a chain had saved its master’s two grandchildren from a snake by sacrificing its life in Bhubaneswar.
