Nellai ex-Mayor murder case: Police suspect DMK functionary’s role
Tirunelveli: The police wish to leave no stone unturned in their investigation to find the motive behind the triple murder of the ex-Mayor of Tirunelveli, her husband and housemaid here a couple of days ago.
Taking around 50 men suspected to have connection with the triple murder, the police also got a fresh lead about the possible involvement of a Dalit woman DMK leader, who according to police sources was allegedly cheated by the ex-Mayor to the tune of Rs 50 lakh.
The ex-Mayor Uma Maheshwari and her husband had reportedly received the amount from the other woman DMK functionary promising to get her the party ticket to contest in the Sankarankoil reserved constituency in the 2016 Assembly election.
However, as the ex-Mayor did not fulfill her promise to her party colleague in the Assembly poll, the woman leader demanded her money and to pacify her, Uma Maheshwari and her husband Muruga Shankaran further assured the woman DMK functionary to get her the party ticket to contest in the 2019 parliamentary election in the Tenkasi reserved constituency.
This ‘promise’ by Uma Maheshwari too was not fulfilled following which the woman leader demanded her money back. This allegedly led to a strife between them and the police suspect whether that could be the motive behind the murder.
A special investigation team, led by inspector Periyasamy has reportedly interrogated the DMK woman functionary, who is now residing in Madurai.
Problem in money transaction between some land brokers and Uma Maheshwari’s husband, who too was involved in real estate business, too might have been the reason behind the murder, suspects the city police.
The investigators have brought some of the real estate brokers too into their investigation, said sources. Tirunelveli city police commissioner, N Baskaran, when asked, however, said that the police will leave no information go unchecked in their investigation to nab the real culprits in the triple murder.
