Bengaluru: Bengalureans will find it difficult to book app based cabs in the first week of August as some drivers of Ola and Uber are planning to support the current indefinite transport strike.
The strike has been called against the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2017, is yet to be passed by the Rajya Sabha.
Though the government claims it will make roads safe, The Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha, while the Rajya Sabha has referred it to a select committee in August 2017.
The new bill will increase in various penalties for traffic violations and make Aadhaar mandatory for driving licence and vehicle registration. In case of deaths caused by hit-and-run cases, the government will provide a compensation of Rs 2 lakh or more to the victim's family. Currently, it is Rs 25,000.
Ananda, a transport association member said, “The government’s attempt to modify the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, have made us call for a strike and we are getting support from all association. We are yet to finalise the date for our strike in August." Sakura Antony, an IT employee, said the strike would badly affect those who use app based cabs for their daily commute. Taxi aggregators have brought a drastic change in the commuting pattern. If Ola and Uber drivers go on strike it will badly affect cab users, he added.
