Travel portal gets rap, told to refund ticket cost

Hyderabad: The Ranga Reddy district consumer forum has ordered the travel aggregator makemytrip.com to refund the cost of tickets together with interest for four years and costs to a city resident.

The forum said the website had not ensured that the refund was received by the complainant, Mr G. Krishna Rao, 52, of Kothapet in the city.

Mr Krishna Rao lodged a complaint stating that he had booked his travel tickets to Shirdi and back to the city 2013 via makemytrip.com. He paid Rs 6,300 with an SBH debit card but had to cancel the tickets within half an hour due to unforeseen circumstances.

Mr Krishna Rao stated that the travel aggregator promised to refund an amount of Rs 5,354, after deducting cancellation charges, within 48 hours into his account, but failed to do so.

The company asked for Mr Krishna Rao’s bank statement twice to check whether the payment had been made. It said it had reimbursed the amount and the complainant must check with the bank. The forum noted that company ought to have taken steps to ensure that the amount was credited into the complainant’s account.

The forum found deficiency in service and asked the company to refund the amount of Rs 5,354 with 12 per cent interest for four years, after deducting the cancellation charges. A sum of Rs 2,000 was also awarded towards costs.
