Chennai: Five years to finish the engineering degree, credits for online courses and more stress on industrial training are some of the features of the revised syllabus which to be introduced in engineering colleges throughout the state from this academic year.
Anna University’s academic council, which will meet on Wednesday, is expected to give its nod for revised engineering syllabus while extending the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to affiliated engineering colleges.
A member who was part of the syllabus committee said the new syllabus intend to introduce advanced programming languages and technologies from the first year itself.
“As per the draft syllabus, the first year students will study advanced programming language Python instead of basic C, C++,” he said. “The new syllabus will allow students to take big data as the elective. The data analytics subject will be extended to all the branches,” he added.
Another professor said the new curriculum will allow engineering graduates to study the course for five years.
“It will permit slow learners to take only four subjects per semester and fast learners to take up to eight subjects. The slow learner can finish the course in five years without any arrears and pass in distinction,” he said. The fast learners can finish the subjects in 6 semesters. They can opt for industrial training or can go to abroad for internships.
As per the current syllabus, all students have to take a minimum of six subjects in each semester. However, private colleges feel they need 30 per cent additional staff and infrastructure to implement CBCS in colleges.
“Getting the quality staff is one of the major problems for engineering colleges. If there are not enough staff members, the colleges may force the students to study in normal mode,” he said.
