M K Stalin condemns attack on reporters in Erode

Stalin said there were reports of \'large scale irregularities\' in the implementation of the free laptops scheme for school students.

Chennai: The DMK president, M K Stalin has condemned the attack on two reporters at a state function to give laptops to school students in Erode on Monday by supporters of AIADMK MLA, K V Ramalingam including the MLA's son.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Stalin said it was shocking and "totally unacceptable" that the reporters - one belonging to a Tamil Daily and another a Tamil news magazine- who had gone for news gathering were assaulted by AIADMK men at the function.

It was even more shocking that some police officials at the spot remained mute spectators to the attack, instead of trying to bring the situation under control after some students there had protested the irregularities in the distribution of the free laptop scheme of the Tamil Nadu government.

Mr. Stalin said there were reports of 'large scale irregularities' in the implementation of the free laptops scheme for school students. The government should study the ground situation and take steps to rectify it and ensure proper distribution of laptops to school students throughout the State.

Instead, AIADMK men unleashing violence against reporters who went to cover the function was very worrisome, Mr. Stalin said and demanded the arrest of those men who attacked the scribes, besides disciplinary action against the two police officials at the scene who kept mum.
