Kannur: Jail raids unearth luxurious items

They were hidden in the roof, walls and toilets, officials said. In total, they seized 19 mobile phones.

Kannur: Odd time raids continued late Monday night on Kannur Central Prison from where DIG (Prisons) Rishiraj Singh recovered many luxurious items the other day.

A team headed by jail superintendent T. Baburaj recovered banned tobacco products, mobile phones and accessories kept illegally by the inmates hidden in their cells.

They seized ten mobile phones, including five smartphones, four power banks, chargers and batteries apart from banned tobacco products from the prisoners' blocks 2, 5, 6, and 7.

They were hidden in the roof, walls and toilets, officials said. In total, they seized 19 mobile phones.

Mr Singh had seized mobile phones, SIM cards, long knives, iron rods, hammers, scissors and sachets of ganja.

He also suspended two prison officials on Tuesday for deputing prisoners for the maintenance of prison wall without sufficient security.

With this, so far five officials of Kannur central prison are under suspension for dereliction of duty.
