Hyderabad: Activists claim win following promise

However, the National Highways Authority said it would ensure that the trees are protected.

Hyderabad: In a major victory, the 950 trees which were about to be chopped on Chevella Road for the sake of Hyderabad-Vijayapura (Bijapur) Highway, the project director has ensured that the trees would be preserved at any cost. The decision was taken at a recent meeting held with environmentalists.

Earlier, after Deccan Chronicle reported about the possible cutting down of trees, there were organisations that came forward to translocate them and even bearing the cost of the process. However, the National Highways Authority said it would ensure that the trees are protected.

Mr Uday Krishna Pedireddy, who started a petition to translocate the trees, said, “We are happy that our request is being considered and a positive decision has been taken.” According to sources, the Centre would soon issue an order imposing stricter rules regarding the translocation of trees which are affected by infrastructure projects.
