Bifurcating Malappuram not scientific, says E P Jayarajan

Khader submitted a notice last week in this regard for a submission.

Thiruvananthapuram: Industries minister E.P. Jayarajan informed the Assembly on Tuesday that the state government was not in favour of bifurcating Malappuram district.

He was replying on behalf of the chief minister to a Calling Attention motion moved by IUML member K.N.A. Khader.

“The suggestion is not scientific,” he said dismissing the demand.

“The priority of the government is to ensure better coordination by decentralising the administrative set up in the district."

Mr Khader submitted a notice last week in this regard for a submission. However, he stepped back at the last moment as the Muslim League, and UDF had not given sanction.

He pointed out that the total population of Mala-ppuram is 44 lakh, which is 12 lakh more than the second-most populated Thiruvananthapuram and 37 lakh more than the neighbouring Wayanad.

The district has failed to achieve the development envisaged according to its population, he said, arguing that it denied people necessary facilities like education and healthcare.

People of some parts of the district have to travel up to 100 km to reach the district hospital or its administrative headquarters.
