Will boycott classes till we are allowed to wear hijab: Protesters

The girls along with some boys shouted slogans against the ban on hijab in the college.

Mangaluru: The hijab row is back! Muslim girl students of St Agnes College here, who were supported by Campus Front of India (CFI), staged a protest in front of the college demanding that the administration allow them to wear hijab.

The girls along with some boys shouted slogans against the ban on hijab in the college. They defined it as a violation of their rights. “The college authorities did not listen to our request or that of the representatives of CFI. We will boycott classes till they allow us to wear hijab," a protester said. However in a press statement, St Agnes College principal Sr Jeswina explained the college rule which states that students are not permitted to wear headscarves in the classroom. “St Agnes College is a minority institution catering to women’s education in particular. We respect every student who chooses to study here. The management has framed rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline. Accordingly, the college rule states that students are not permitted to wear headscarves in the classroom,” she said in the press release.

“However, we have no objection if they wear it outside. The students and their parents are aware of this rule when they seek admission in our college. Yet a few students have gone on a protest without even submitting a memorandum. If there are any issues, the management will settle the matter with the students and their parents,” she added.
