State urges Hyderabad HC to amend law for debt relief

The government wants to appoint an eminent person with experience in agriculture, law and finance, he said and sought time.

Hyderabad: The state government on Monday informed the Hyderabad High Court it had issued an ordinance amending the Telangana State Commission for Debt Relief (Small Farmers, Agricultural Labourers and Rural Artisans) Act, 2016, to appoint a chairman to the commission.

Mr S. Sharath Kumar. special counsel for the government, placed a copy of the ordinance before a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice J. Uma Devi.

The bench was dealing with a contempt case moved by BJP leader N. Indrasena Reddy seeking to punish the chief secretary for failing to constitute the commission despite the assurance given to the court.

Mr Kumar submitted that as per the Act, a retired judge has to head the commission. The government wants to appoint an eminent person with experience in agriculture, law and finance, he said and sought time. The bench adjourned the matter for a week.
