Hyderabad: Coming down hard on traffic violators, the Hyderabad traffic police has barred 92 persons from driving for repeated violation of traffic laws this year. After the implementation of Point Penalty system, traffic police has suspended 778 licence till the end of May.

Apart from the 92 violators who are permanently banned from driving, 429 face three-month bans, 24 for six months, 104 for a year and 29 violators for three years.

Another 114 violators were banned for two years, 27 for four years, two for five years and one person has been banned from driving for a decade. The move to curb traffic violations by suspending driving licences has created a good impact, the traffic police said.

“The suspension of licences for multiple traffic violations will generate awareness among the motorists to follow traffic rules and make the roads safer,” said Mr Anil Kumar, additional traffic commissioner, Hyderabad, Mr K. Vinod Kumar, a road safety expert from the Indian Federation of Road Safety, said, “the penalty point system is really worth it. This is being discussed in other states. If it is implemented for long time without any intervention, most regular traffic violators will be out of the roads.”
