Chidambaram family appears before special court
Chennai: Nalini Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram and Srinidhi, wife, son and daughter in-law of former Union Minister and Congress MP, P Chidambaram respectively, have appeared before a special court for economic offences cases, Egmore at Allikulam on Monday in connection with a prosecution initiated against them by Income Tex Department under Black Money Act.
On June 19, on a complaint from Income Tax Department, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, S. Malarvizhi ordered issuance of summons to the trio and directed them to appear before the court on June 25.
According to IT Department, Karti had not disclosed an overseas bank account he maintained in Metro Bank in UK and investments he made in Nano Holdings LLC, USA. Karti also failed to disclose investments made by Chess Global Advisory, a company co-owned by him, which amounts to an offence under the Black Money Act. The department alleged that the trio had not disclosed Rs 5.37 crore worth property they jointly own in Cambridge, in UK and Rs 3.28 crore worth properties in USA.
The IT Department initiated prosecution against them under section 50 of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act. A complaint was filed before the court. Earlier, the judge, S. Malarvizhi issued them summons under section 50 of the Act and directed them to appear before the court on June 25.
When the matter came up for hearing before Malarvizhi, they appeared before the court at 11.am and filed dispense with appearance petition. The judge directed the prosecution to file reply and adjourned the matter to July 23.
A large number of police force was posted in the court complex. Meanwhile, Congress workers raised slogans against the Centre for foisting case against them.
