UP, Karnataka mangoes keep season on
Hyderabad: Although the mango season will end by June, the king of fruits will be available for the city for one more month as crops from Karnataka and UP are still coming in. Most mangoes that arrive in Hyderabad reach Gaddiannaram, the biggest fruit market in Telangana and AP. Andhra Pradesh mainly produces Banginapalli and Totapuri/Totapari verities. But since the mango season has ended in the Telugu states, the imports have been coming down day-by-day. During season, the market receives at least 2,500 trucks of mangoes with a capacity of 10 tonne each. Since June 1, the imports have come down to 50 trucks.
However, Karnataka and UP are exporting huge quantities of mangoes to the market – 60 truckloads per day. President of the Wholesale Fruit Commission Agents’ Association, Mohammad Tajuddin, said that farmers from Karnataka and UP have promised that the exports will continue up to the end of July.
“There is a large demand for varieties like Totapari/Totapuri, Lalbagh, Benishan, Raspuri, Goa, Malgoba, Rumali and Mallika, and these are being imported from Karnataka. Utter Pradesh is exporting the Dasehri verity which has good demand in South,” he said. A 10-tonne truckload of Dasehri is being sold for Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in the market. Agents and wholesalers are selling to retailers at Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg which is sold to consumers at Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg. Other varieties like Totapuri, Raspuri, Malgoa, Rumali and Mallika are being sold at Rs 40 per kg at wholesale markets. Consumers are purchasing them Rs 60 to Rs 100 per kg. Y. Sujatha, a resident from Malakpet said that mangoes were more affordable now compared to start of season. “Also, quality is usually bad during rains. But not this year,” she said.
